Meller's Villa in Riga, Mezaparks. About Mezaparks: Before the mid19th century, the area was home to farmers who sold their produce in Riga; it was also a favourite place for the city people to spend their leisure in summer. At the end if the 19th century, chief engineer of the Riga city A.G. Agte conceived an idea to develop a summer house district in the surroundings of Lake Ķīšezers. An intensive development of summer houses followed. During the years of Latvia's independence, the developments in Mežaparks continued, and several hundreds of private villas were built. Mežaparks now has grown into one of the most prestigious neighbourhoods in the city. Traditionally, the district is home to the local intelligentsia, artists, musicians and diplomats. Serenity, bird songs, rustle of pine trees and fragrant forest air are all characteristics of the district and reasons why life there is so pleasant. History of Villa: The Meller's Villa on 32, Stokholmas iela (1914) is special with its asymmetrically dynamic spatial structure. The original layout was proposed by the owner himself, but the construction design was highly professionally developed by the architectural atelier "Beatge & Steinber". The villa is a onestorey stone building with an attic. The main entrance is marked by a Tuscan style column and corner junction. The cornice is supported by a classical row of denticles. The large doors open up to an antechamber and lead into the central hall, which is adjoined by the master's cabinet, living room with a fireplace and a veranda that opens up to the garden. Through a special gate one can easily reach the kitchen, which has another door to the garden. An open staircase leads directly from the hall to the attic floor with four bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate room for the servant. Rational, convenient and democratic. In 1931 the building was slightly enlarged following the project of architect Kārlis Bikše. A dining room was constructed on the first floor, thus reducing the size of the terrace next to the garden.
